Goddard College
Goddard College is a small, historic four-year college located on a beautiful 175-acre campus in Plainfield, Vermont. Founded in 1863, Goddard is devoted to a progressive, student-centered philosophy of learning. Both of the College’s acclaimed M.F.A. programs are offered at its Port Townsend center: the M.F.A. in Creative Writing and M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts. These programs operate on a low-residency model, requiring just eight days’ presence on campus at the start of every semester. The rest of the term is spent studying at home or wherever else the student happens to be.
Goddard is the progenitor of low-residency education, having launched the very first such degree program in the country back in 1963, and the first low-residency Creative Writing M.F.A. in the early Seventies. The College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and authorized by the Washington Higher Education Coordination Board.
Goddard gives highly motivated students the opportunity to create their own curriculum. There are no courses; every student designs her/his own path to attaining learning objectives that are unique to the student. We respect our students as capable, responsible adults and treat them as individuals, not numbers. Standardized test scores are not required, and narrative evaluations are awarded in lieu of letter grades. Our faculty comprises outstanding professionals and educators, many of whom are award winners in their respective fields, and our alumni also include numerous successful and award-winning writers and artists.
