BIOGRAPHY
Originally from the Midwest, transplanted to New England then to the Pacific Northwest, I have been able to explore the landscapes of the U.S. as an educator and as a biologist. I have worked as a field biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service in remote areas of Alaska and the PNW. I have been a classroom teacher and have run environmental education programs for adult and school aged students in a variety of settings. My Master’s research explores the foraging ecology of harlequin ducks as well as the distributions of other river dependent bird species on Olympic rivers. I am currently balancing part-time teaching at Peninsula College with research work with the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. I am happily ensconced on the Olympic peninsula where I enjoy the tranquility and beauty of my community.
Teaching Philosophy
I strive to facilitate the students’ personal academic growth by providing a challenging atmosphere of diverse methodologies such as lecture, group problem solving, independent research, writing, and lab/field work. I recognize every student as an individual with incredible potential to learn and contribute positively to the class. Life science classes take advantage of the diverse environments of the Peninsula College campus and North Olympic Peninsula at large whenever possible.
Interests
Academic Interests: I have a personal and professional interest in ornithology, specifically seabirds and sea ducks. With my position as research assistant at the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, I continue to explore many aspects of marine biology and oceanography.
Outside Interests I take advantage of the proximity to wild places whenever possible by hiking with my dogs, skiing or kayaking. I enjoy working with clay as well as all aspects of food (growing, preparing, eating).
Policies
My policies are in line with those of the College. In addition, it is critical that students attend labs as they are nearly impossible to make up so this is stressed in my syllabi.
