Academic Progress and Performance Policy
ACADEMIC PROGRESS AND PERFORMANCE Board Policy Number: 421

Peninsula College is committed to facilitating the academic success of students. The primary purpose of the Academic Progress and Performance Policy is to quickly identify and alert students with low academic achievement and provide those students with assistance to improve their academic performance.
Students must earn a GPA of 2.0 or above. If not, the college will place the student progressively on alert, probation, or suspension.
- A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0 will be placed on academic alert.
- A student on academic alert who fails to earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 at the end of the subsequent quarter of enrollment will be placed on academic probation.
- A student on academic probation who fails to earn a quarterly grade point average of at least 2.0 in the next quarter of enrollment will be placed on academic suspension. A suspended student may petition for re-admission to the College after waiting a period of 12 months.
Students placed on Academic Suspension may exercise the right to appeal for Immediate Academic Reinstatement.
Certain vocational programs, international students, veterans, and students receiving financial aid may have different and/or additional academic standard requirements and appeal processes.
ACADEMIC PROGRESS AND PERFORMANCE PROCEDURE Academic Alert A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0 will be placed on academic alert.
Students placed on Academic Alert will be sent a letter that offers effective study tips and advises them to take advantage of college support resources and to meet with an advisor to develop an educational plan. Students may lose their ability to self-advise or carry a full course load.
Academic Probation A student on academic alert who fails to earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 at the end of the subsequent quarter of enrollment will be placed on academic probation.
A student placed on Academic Probation will be required to complete an Academic Success plan with an advisor that outlines steps for improving the student’s academic performance. Registration will be blocked for a student on Academic Probation until the student secures advisor approval to enroll in specific classes. A student will remain on academic probation until the overall cumulative GPA is 2.0 or above.
Student will lose the ability to self-advise and may lose the ability to carry a full course load.
Academic Suspension A student on academic probation who fails to earn a quarterly grade point average of at least 2.00 in the next quarter of enrollment will be placed on academic suspension.
Students who are placed on Academic Suspension will remain on suspension for twelve months. Students on suspension will be able to reenroll in classes only by appealing and obtaining approval from the Student Affairs Committee. Otherwise, a student may reenroll after a period of twelve months.
Prior to the 1st day of the subsequent quarter, students on suspension will be blocked from registration. Students who enrolled for classes prior to suspension will be administratively withdrawn, and tuition paid will be refunded.
Appeal for Academic Reinstatement Immediate Reinstatement: Students placed on Academic Suspension will receive notification that outlines the appeal process for Academic Reinstatement.
Students must petition to the Student Affairs Committee to obtain immediate reinstatement. Prior to meeting with the Student Affairs Committee the student must complete the Reinstatement Request and bring it to the appointment with the following outlined:
- the student’s short-term educational goals
- specific plans to overcome barriers and improve the student’s academic progress
- proposed course schedule
If approved, the student will be placed on conditional probation and will sign a contract outlining the conditions. Students placed on conditional probation status who do not satisfactorily complete the quarter will not be considered for re-admission until after a suspension period of 12 months.
Students will remain on conditional probation for a period of 12 months.
Re-Enrollment after Suspension: A suspended student may petition for re-admission to the College after waiting a period of 12 months.
The student must arrange for an appointment with an advisor prior to the beginning of the quarter that the student wants to attend. The student will complete the Re-Enrollment after Suspension Form with their advisor that will include:
- the student’s short-term educational goals
- specific plans to overcome barriers and improve the student’s academic progress
- proposed course schedule
The advisor will discuss the plan with the student and outline specific conditions that the student must meet for re-enrollment. The Re-Enrollment after Suspension Form will be forwarded to Enrollment Services.
