Florence, Italy
The jewel of Renaissance Italy, the Florence of today bears witness to its glorious past and its vibrant present. Its buildings and monuments tell their own stories of a period when art reigned supreme, of the later ravages of war, and of life as ordinary and extraordinary people live it. Whether you go for a day or a month, you can’t help but be changed by the experience of walking the very same streets and pathways that others before you, like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Dante, also trod.
The opportunity to teach and live in this ageless and beautiful city can be yours through the Washington Community College Consortium for Study Abroad to which Peninsula College belongs. In fact, this spring, we will be sending our first faculty exchange member to Florence when Kate Reavey travels there to teach creative writing and literature.

Kate says: “I am particularly excited to be teaching in Florence because it will afford students a wealth of perspectives. The rare opportunity to write poetry, prose, or memoir amid the architectural wonders of this city will be ours each day. Renaissance literature will bring history into our daily lives, even as we visit the piazzas and campos that some of the masters knew in their time. We will appreciate unique cultural perspectives during our stay, and the natural beauty of springtime will surround us. My field is writing and literature, yet Florence (and the broader region, Tuscany) is known not only for its literature and visual arts but also for the sustainability of the culture and of the land.”

Student Opportunities in Florence
Florence, Italy – Spring, 2010
Membership in the Washington Community College Consortium for Study Abroad (WCCCSA) allows Peninsula College students and faculty to participate in a broad range of international learning opportunities.
WCCCSA faculty compliment classroom learning with trips to local museums, historical and other significant sites and related events. Students are encouraged to learn by observing and interacting with the local citizenry and by traveling to places of interest on the weekends. When you study abroad, you not only learn about other cultures and other ways of experiencing the world, you gain insight into your own culture and how it is perceived by others.
