Haiti Relief Effort

"LEAN ON ME" CAMPAIGN

On January 12, 2010 at 4:53 p.m. the country of Haiti experienced an epic disaster of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. An estimated 3 million people, a third of Haiti's population may need emergency relief.

Each day you can either upload the latest news on your computer, read the conversations on all the social media sites or watch the television for the updates on this dire situation.

Peninsula College's Associated Student Council (ASC) has decided to join in the efforts to help the people of Haiti.  We have called our campaign, "Lean on Me".  For the next two weeks, beginning Tuesday, January 26, 2010, through Tuesday, February 9, 2010, our goal is to raise $5,000 to aid the earthquake survivors and give them a chance to rebuild their lives.  We have placed donation jars in the Bookaneer Bookstore and Joy's Bistro, both located in the PUB.

It may seem like an ambitious goal, but the challenge is ours.  Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and it will take years to overcome this massive tragedy.  This is an opportunity to show we care. Please join us and give whatever you can and help the families of Haiti rebuild.

Below are some opportunities for you to contribute and more are in the works.

  • Four Port Angeles coffee stands, as well as Sassy Kat Solon, will provide donation jars to collect money for the American Red Cross through the weekend. People visiting Coffee Cottage, Grandview, Higher Grounds and Round-up can pick up a cup of coffee and make a donation in one stop.

  • We have placed donation jars at the Bookaneer, Joy’s Bistro and the Library.

  • The Associated Student Council fund raising effort will also include activities at Wednesday’s home basketball game against Bellevue.

  • Peninsula College nursing student Linda Hofer, who’s mother Dieula Fromm was born and raised in Haiti, will offer authentic Haiti food “to go” on Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 511 E. 8th Street. Fromm, who runs a commercial catering business from that address, will have Peninsula nursing students on hand to help with the buffet, as well as volunteers from the American Red Cross.

  • You can make a web or text donation by going to www.redcross.org to donate directly.

No amount is too small. Please consider tossing your loose change, or a few bucks, into the donation jars whenever you can. Your gift will support the Haiti Relief & Development through the American Red Cross.  Please feel free to contact Athena Christianson, ASC President at (360) 417-6432 or ASC advisor, Rick Ross, at (360) 417-6533 or rross@pencol.edu if you have any questions.
