As one of the nation’s largest college financial aid programs in the country, the Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program is one of the major scholarship programs nationally that specifically assists high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives.
The Horatio Alger Scholarship application will open on August 1 and close on October 25. The Horatio Alger Scholarship application is a common application meaning that you apply once and you will be considered for the range of scholarship programs offered by the Association. In order to be considered, your application and all required materials must be uploaded to your online application by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on October 25.
The Career & Technical application will open on March 15, 2023.
To be considered for the Horatio Alger Trott Scholarship, applicants must complete the Horatio Alger Scholarship application by September 25. Your application and all required materials must be uploaded to your online application by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on September 25.
Trott Scholarship Deadline: September 25
General Application Deadline: October 25
Applicant Eligibility:
- Have completed high school (or earned a high school equivalency credential)
- Will be enrolled in eligible program in Fall 2022
- Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a career or technical program (up to 2 years) at an accredited non-profit post-secondary institution in the United States
- Demonstrated critical financial need (must be eligible to receive the Federal Pell grant as determined by completion of the FAFSA)
- Demonstrated perseverance in overcoming adversity
- Be under the age of 30
- Be a United States citizen
- Recipients must attend the National Scholars Conference to receive the award.

- Complete the online application form which will be available starting August 1, 2021. (You do not need to complete the application in one sitting; you can save & come back to it later.)
- The Horatio Alger Association awards scholarships to those students who have confronted and overcome significant adversity. It is important that applicants are as detailed as possible so as to provide the selection committee a clear picture of individual circumstances.
- Upload all required documents online through the application form. (No documents submitted by mail, email or fax will be accepted.)
- Submit the application.
