Peninsula College is proud to announce John Vaillant as the 2024 Writer in Residence. Vaillant, and award-winning science and nature writer is best known for his book, The Golden Spruce, A True Story of Myth, Madness and Greed, which won the Governor General Literary Award for nonfiction, British Columbia’s National Award for Canadian nonfiction. Vaillant also wrote other bestselling books, including The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival, which won the RBC Taylor Prize for Nonfiction and the Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction.
Other notable works are The Jaguar’s Children, and most recently Fire Weather, A True Story from A Hotter World. Fire Weather, his nonfiction book about climate change, has been named a finalist for the Shaughnessy-Cohen Prize for Political Writing (Canada), and for the BC-Yukon Non-Fiction Prize. It was also a 2023 Finalist for the national Book Award, and named book of the year by the New York Times, The New Yorker, the Financial Times, and the Guardian, among many other prominent publications.
Vaillant's presence at Peninsula College promises to empower aspiring writers and storytellers to pursue their creative passions and make a positive impact on the world through use of their words.
